Standup For The Cure

On May 5, 2012, a unique, first-time event will launch in Newport Beach, California bringing together the worlds of Stand Up Paddle and the fight against breast cancer. Standup for the Cure is the brainchild of Judie Vivian, a breast cancer survivor and advocate for the Orange County Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®.

 

“In 2010, mammography saved my life. I want women locally to have the same access to breast health care that I did. Through fundraising events like Standup for the Cure, we can make that happen for local women. Imagine a fleet of paddlers on standup paddleboards wearing pink in support of breast cancer awareness,” exclaims Judie Vivian.

Standup for the Cure will include: “how-to-clinics” taught by Maui Jim ambassador Zane Schweitzer; paddleboard yoga demonstrations; kid’s fun races; team relay races; live music; delicious food; silent auction; and, a special screening of new Gidget movie.

 

“It’s going to be a celebration of our lifestyle. This is an opportunity for families, friends and survivors to raise money and ultimately save lives by doing something they love. This is a great opportunity to learn how to paddle a Standup Paddleboard and meet the pros that are leading this new revolution,” commented event director Dan Van Dyck, whose mother is a 38-year breast cancer survivor.

 

Maui Jim Women's Adventure Series
Born on the beaches of Maui, what better way to share that connection with the Hawaiian lifestyle than to visit some of the most beautiful shoreline in the world to host a unique series of surfing and yoga experiences for women. The  new Women’s Adventure Series that will debut at five luxury resorts in 2012. Hosted by  longboard surf ambassador, Mary Osborne of Ventura, CA, these retreats combine relaxing yoga sessions with the thrill of surfing to create a fun-filled mini-retreat.

 

“The aloha spirit quickly spreads among groups of women as they discover the thrill of standing on a surfboard, either for the first time or as experts,” said Linda Glassel, vice president of marketing at Maui Jim. “We thought the women in Maui Jim’s community would enjoy a relaxing retreat and the camaraderie of learning a new sport from one of the best in surfing.”

 

The Women’s Adventure Series will be hosted at some of the loveliest surfing resorts, including Crowne Place Melbourne Oceanfront Resort and Spa in Melbourne Beach, FL, from May 18-20; La Jolla Shores Hotel in San Diego from June 22-24; Hyatt Regency Newport Beach, CA, from July 20-22; Crowne Plaza in Ventura, CA, from August 24-26; and Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa in Hawaii from September 27-October 1.

 

The series is designed for women of all ages and surfing abilities. Each retreat begins with a breakfast and yoga session with Osborne, followed by an afternoon of surf instruction. Evenings will feature gourmet dinners and presentations by noted guest speakers announced shortly before each event. The program schedule includes ample time for reflection, sessions at the spa, a swim in the pool, shopping and great conversation with friends.

Send a Lei and Help the Oceans
During 2011, Maui Jim plans to spread some virtual “aloha spirit” around the world with a new promotion, “Send a Lei,” that raises money for The Ocean Project, the world's most extensive network of zoos, aquariums, museums focused on ocean education and conservation. Visitors to our Facebook page this year will have the opportunity to send a virtual Hawaiian Lei to their friends, along with some good vibes and well wishes. There are three Leis from which you can choose that all stand for a particular greeting. We will track the number of Leis sent worldwide, filling up the online “Aloha-o-Meter.” Each time the meter fills to the top, the company will donate $10,000 to The Ocean Project.
