Should Be Called Akoni 2.
Review by: Anthony -
Fit Durability Style Value These are good mind you but far from perfect. Pound for pound these are almost exactly the same as Maui Jim's Akoni sunglasses. These are a tad bit bigger in both temple and bridge lengths but that's not such a big deal when measured in millimeters.
These differ from the Akoni's in that the shape of the frame & lenses are somewhat altered & more squarer & the Sand Islands do have the Maui Jim Evolution lenses as opposed to the superthin glass lenses of the Akoni. But again basically these are the same sunglasses...almost.
Truth be told I like these but I like the Akoni's better as they have more of a rounded frame/lense shape which accents my face better than the squarer Sand Islands.
Not that I'm saying I'm going to return these, I'll keep them but I'm kinda disappointed in that they look sort of funny on me but other than that, the fit & feel of them, as well as the lenses themselves are top notch.(Posted on 1/8/13)

A Cut Above
Review by: Maui Waui -
Fit Durability Style Value I love the shape of the lenses and frames on the Sand Islands. Tear drop aviators never compliments my rounder face and I needed a pair of glasses that would read wider than longer. The design is curvy, smooth, and slick. The accent color on the temples is almost like a chrome mauve, which is unique to their design. The lenses are the special treat. I deal with a lot of glare wearing contacts and I am shocked at the real-world application these glasses have for minimizing reflections and glare. Absolutely perfect clarity. One thing I noticed about fit would be when I smile, the bottom of the frames bumps my cheeks but it isn't uncomfortable, just noticeable. The other thing relating to fit would be that they do not squeeze on the temples or sides of the head, the arms have a flexibility at the joint which makes them very comfortable. They say Sand Islands are for smaller faces. I would agree with this as they look pretty good on both me and my wife. I wouldn't mind if they scrapped the uni-sex appeal of the Sand Islands and released a slightly larger size for men.

Not for small heads or faces
Review by: LRay -
These frames come up when you choose the options for small heads or faces. The bottom of these frames laid very heavy on the tops of my cheeks. They left marks! These frames, however, are really sturdy and well made so I was dissapointed that they didn't work. They look really nice. The Cliffhouse are a MUCH better fit.

Great all-around frame - durability and style
Review by: benJammin -
Durability Fit Value Style Pros: Sturdy frame impressed me, really liked the spring hinges on the arm pieces. As usual Maui Jim optics on the lenses are crazy good.
Cons: Difficult to find a negative - the only thing I would say is that the MauiGradient fade lenses in the bronze color tended to let in a little more light than I was expecting. Maybe not the best lens color/gradient choice if you're going to be directly facing the sun for extended periods of time.
My first pair of Maui Jim sunglasses. I received these about a year ago and they were great. The frame seems very well-constructed and MJ lenses were a nice surprise - great contrast between colors, sharpness and clarity - and yet somehow still "softens" the light and makes it easy on the eyes.
If you want a sunglass for active sports (I'm a runner), these might work for you if you tried to make it happen, but that's definitely not what I used them for - just a great all-around sunglass for daily wear. I would recommend a rimless or semi-rimless style (i.e. Banzai 425 or Ho'okipa 407) if you're wanting a pair for fast-moving sports activities.
As far as the fit, I suggest trying them on first before purchasing - but I have a medium-large head shape and these worked well for me.
Overall a great pair of sunglasses, sturdy frames with great optics and style. Thanks Maui Jim!(Posted on 11/28/12)
